My Most Hated Lyric
From the second I first heard this lyric, it crawled under my skin where it has been living happily ever since. Taunting me. Knowing that, years from now, it will lead me to madness and my ultimate demise.
The lyric is ‘I got my conscious asking questions that I can’t find’ taken from the song ‘Never Ever’ by All Saints.
How can your conscious ask questions that...

What one track most inspired your style?
There’s not really one track. I think you can tell our music has been influenced by lots of different styles. From ‘Guns of Brixton’ by The Clash to Bob Dylan. Mat’s really into phunkadelic, I’m more into my sweet folk...

Why did you decide to become a TV presenter?
I didn’t want to have to do a normal job in society and I lacked the height to be a model. I was also lacking the look, the body, the face pretty much everything needed to be a model. Being a model was never really on the cards. So yeah...
House of Tracks Interviews P to R
Here is another batch of House of Tracks interviews including Plaid, Paul Hawkins and Peggy Sue And The Pictures.
— Paul Hawkins
I still recall my first impression of Paul Hawkins, a lone figure on stage at the 12 Bar, strumming a guitar and bawling out a tuneless rant. “Is this guy for real?” I thought. Two years and two albums later, turns out he is. Since then I’ve...

What are your influences?
I try to have as many as possible. When I was younger I used to listen to old school ska and reggae and a lot of old Clash stuff.
We interviewed the Kooks last month and Luke said The Clash where a big influence on their sound too.
Well the Clash are the best band that have ever come...

I heard you had quite a hellish experience at Bestival this year. Are you traumatized?

How did you all meet?
Me and Jamie grew up together in our teenage years. He lived in Uddingston, me in Blantyre. There was a mushroom field equidistant. Drugs and Beatles were our glue. I met Michael up a tree in Kelvingrove Park. We were trying to get some ‘blue shit’ off the tree. Shared a...

Bad Eight Bar Breaks
Maybe I listen to music too closely but bad eight bar breaks are really apparent to me. Like seeing Comic Sans used on the menu in a posh restaurant.
I think they must have written a really good song, but decided that without a break in the middle then it’s a little too repetitive. So they panic and quickly write a bad eight bar break in the hope that people don’t pay very much...

I Hate MS Excel 2007
Hate is a strong word. Perhaps I could do with spending some more time with Microsoft’s complete redesign of Excel before using such a strong word. But seriously, what were they thinking?
It’s no secret that Excel is the only decent program Microsoft have ever created. It’s a really powerful tool once you get to grips with building formulas and conditional formatting. Word is...
